The first man looked uneasy in his traditional undershirt which had buttons falling off and appeared messy. The second man who had a moustache and was smoking a cigar wore a modern long-sleeve crew-neck T-shirt.

Cooper Underwear Company promoted "The Bachelor Shirt" with the catchy slogan "No Safety Pins No Needle No Thread No Buttons." These long-sleeve T-shirts then became popular with the US Navy, who started asking sailors to wear undershirts that don’t have buttons.

Over the following years the ‘T-shirt’ style became popular and was first seen in print in F. F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel "This Side of Paradise" and subsequently first appeared in a movie in 1951 when actor Marlon Brando wore it in the film "A Streetcar Named Desire." This helped boost T-shirt sales to $180 million that year.

The 1950s marked the start of printed T-shirts. Businesses quickly saw this as a way to promote their products. With Disney starting to print pictures of Mickey Mouse and other characters, along with names of their resorts on T-shirts. Soon after other companies joined in seeking fresh ways to advertise their brands.

In the 1960s people started wearing T-shirts to display their favourite rock bands.

Album covers started appearing on T-shirts and soon these shirts became a way for people to express political messages too.

At the end of the 1960s T-shirts became more colourful with the introduction of tie-dye.

In 1977 graphic designer Milton Glaser created one of the most famous T-shirt designs of all time.

The “I (heart) NY” T-shirt was created as part of a marketing campaign for New York state. Since then, many other cities around the world have copied this design for their own souvenirs and T-shirts.

The now yearly celebration of T-shirts started in 2008 as an initiative by the brand Spreadshirt, with other big brands following suit. Over the following 2 years the initiative grew with T-Shirt giveaways, ‘take one, leave one’ promotions and competitions.

T-shirts have changed a lot since 1904, from just being basic clothing worn under other clothes to a popular way for people to show their personality and express themselves.

The T-shirt has become a must-have item in almost everyone’s closet with the average person owning 27 of them!

So, grab yourself a Michael’s Meanderings original image T-Shirt, that not only looks great, but is sustainably made, vegan, 100%organic cotton and can be ‘remade’ into new T-Shirts.

View my current range here.

My store is provided by the world's first open-access circular supply chain.
